Artist Statement

My practice spans painting, ceramics, yarn work and is rooted in curiosity, material exploration, and the subtle intelligence of the natural world. Drawing from close observation of nature, I move fluidly between representation and abstraction, exploring colour, texture, pattern, and surface through slow, layered processes.

Working with diluted pigments on prepared surfaces, I build depth and quiet complexity over time. I am drawn to imperfection and subtle imbalance, seeking moments of equilibrium that reflect both the work itself and lived experience.

Alongside painting, I work with ceramics and other material-based processes that extend my understanding of form, layering, and transformation. More recently, I have been creating my own earth pigments using potting soil as well as using natural earth pigments from around the world and mineral pigments, deepening my engagement with place and the inherent qualities of natural materials.

My background in graphic design, art, and illustration, together with professional experience in India and Singapore, continues to inform a practice that balances conceptual clarity with an intuitive, process-led approach. Across all mediums, I see making as an act of observation, experimentation, and continual discovery.

Artist Bio

Aparna Chakravarty is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice spans painting, ceramics, yarn work, grounded in an enduring interest in materiality, and process. With a background in graphic design, art, and illustration, and professional experience across India and Singapore, she brings a considered visual sensibility to an evolving practice.

Drawing from close observation of nature, her work explores the relationships between colour, texture, pattern, and surface through slow, layered processes. Whether working with paint, clay, or handmade pigments, she embraces the transformative qualities of materials, allowing time, touch, and repetition to shape each piece.

Her recent practice has expanded into working with earth pigments from around the world, developing her own earth pigments using potting soil and naturally occurring mineral pigments. This ongoing research deepens her engagement with the physical and poetic qualities of the landscape, creating works that are rooted in place while reflecting broader themes of memory, impermanence, and connection.

Her work is held in private collections across India, the United States, Hong Kong, and Singapore.
